Carbon Credits: Opportunities for Vietnamese Businesses Amid Green Transition Pressures

As global demand for sustainability intensifies, carbon credits are no longer merely a compliance requirement under international commitments—they are emerging as a strategic opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to unlock new, sustainable revenue streams.

Following agreements reached at COP26, countries around the world, including Vietnam, have been actively developing carbon markets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move toward achieving Net Zero by 2050.

A carbon market encompasses transactions involving greenhouse gas emission allowances and carbon credits, created through trading and offset mechanisms governed by international agreements. Within this framework, countries that emit less than their committed targets can sell or transfer emission rights to those exceeding their limits.

Carbon credits, in particular, are tradable certificates representing one metric ton of CO₂, or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.

The growing global demand for carbon credits has accelerated the expansion of this market. In Vietnam, the development of a carbon market not only enables businesses to align with emission reduction commitments but also opens up significant income potential for those adopting well-planned investment strategies in carbon credits.

As part of the “Talk GreenBiz – The Compass for Green Growth” series, an online forum titled “Carbon Credits – New Opportunities from Green Pressure” is being organized by Dan Tri Newspaper in collaboration with the For a Green Future Foundation, an initiative of Vingroup. The session aims to provide updated insights, strategic direction, and practical guidance to help businesses adapt to rapidly evolving carbon pricing mechanisms at both domestic and international levels.

The forum will feature guest expert Ms. Đặng Hồng Hạnh, Co-founder and CEO of VNEEC. With nearly 30 years of experience in climate change and carbon markets, she has led numerous projects on greenhouse gas inventories, carbon credit development, and policy as well as MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) system implementation across Vietnam and the region.

The discussion will delve into key topics such as the processes of measuring, verifying, and registering carbon credits in both domestic and international contexts; the current level of preparedness among major Vietnamese enterprises in entering the carbon market; and the role of carbon markets as a critical financial mechanism for mobilizing resources toward sustainable development.

The expert will also offer practical recommendations addressing key business concerns: What strategies should companies adopt when investing in and participating in carbon markets? How can the market be structured to ensure fairness for small and medium-sized enterprises? And how can carbon credits evolve from a compliance burden into a viable source of additional income?

The forum will be livestreamed on Dan Tri at 9:00 AM on September 29.
